History

Polyphon-Werke Aktiengesellschaft  was founded in 1885 by two Leipzig factory engineers, and manufactured musical devices. The company later branched into manufacturing phonographs and records (and typewriters and automobiles!) In 1917 the Deutsche Grammophon company was seized by the German government as enemy property and sold to Polyphon. The Gramophone Company recordings listed above were then re-released on the Polyphon label. The corporate cousin Polydor label was set up by DGG for export purposes.
