Biography

Rabbi David Prato was born in 1882 in Livorno. He moved to Florence at a young age where in 1914 he became the Director of the Talmud Torah and cantor at the Temple. In 1927, he accepted the post of Grand Rabbi of Alexandria, Egypt.

In 1936 Prato became the Chief Rabbi of Rome and director of the Collegio Rabbinico Italiano. He spearheaded an unprecedented community message for the High Holidays in September, 1937, from "The Rabbis of Italy to their Brethren," condemning Jews in Italy who were promoting assimilationist practices under the sway of Fascist ideology. Following Italy's adoption of harsh racial laws, Prato moved to Palestine where he held a position at the Grand Synagogue of Tel Aviv. He returned to Rome in 1947, remaining until his death in 1951.
